Lap of America - Day 1

The journey begins.

Today’s route took us straight up I-75 to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

We left the house at about 8:00 am and ventured up the freeway into the north woods at the breakneck speed of about 65 mph.

I’m real comfortable in this rig at that speed.  I rarely catch up to anything so don’t have to mess with lane changes and such.  It does take a little more time to get there, but we’re OK with that.
We approached Mackinaw City about lunch time.

So we just HAD to stop at Darrow’s for lunch.  It’s a great restaurant away from the crowds in Mackinaw City.

We had parked the RV at the base of the bridge and walked the couple blocks to the restaurant to stretch our legs.

After we finished lunch, we took a couple minutes and walked down to the beach for the “bridge shot”.

Then it was over the bridge and on to our day 1 destination.  The Soo Locks Campground in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan...or as my GPS says, "Salt Stee Marie".

We set up camp in site #42 on the St. Marys River just downstream from the locks.

We're kind of squeezed into the site (It's about 20' wide), but the view from our campsite is sweet.

There were a few ships that passed this afternoon like this one.

And this one.

And this one.

Wait a minute, how did this guy get in there?

Ships, ships, everywhere and they pass pretty close here.  It’s probably a hundred yards give or take.

One of the cruise ships that ply the Great Lakes was docked here today and left late in the day.  It’s the “Pearl Mist”.  Kind of has that Pirates of the Caribbean feel to it.

So that filled the day.  It looks like there will be another half dozen ships pass here in the evening and overnight.

Tomorrow we’re planning a ride through the locks on the Soo Locks Boat Tour.

I'll try to keep up with our travels as we go along but sometimes it won't happen.  My access to internet will be very limited and when I do have access, it's usually not the best.

Stay tuned.
