We took the route through Grand Forks. The reason will become clear in a minute.
We got on
the road this morning quite early with the sun behind us casting our shadow “box”
as we travel west on US-2.
The road
was in good condition and the winds light, so I decided it might be a good time
for a little RV driver training.
Kathy will
likely have to pilot this machine at some point during the trip when we get
into the rental car game. Either that,
or she always drives when we rent a car.
We
continue west across Minnesota. It’s
quite a change of scenery from a day ago.
Where did the trees go?
At East
Grand Forks, MN we’re here!
What
else? Another quilt shop.
But this
time there’s a bonus across the street.
Cabela’s!!!!
Now we’re
talking.
After
trying on a few pair of pants, looking at the camping gear, the guns, the
boating equipment, the fishing tackle, the…
I walked
across the street to check on the quilter’s progress. The Carpenter’s song “We’ve only just begun”
came to mind.
I left her to her mission and returned to pick up one of the pair of
pants I tried on at Cabela’s. I came out
and saw Kathy with her sack of goods.
Hey lady…maybe
need a wheelbarrow? I added air pressure
to the RV tires to handle the extra load and we were on our way again. Across the Red River into Grand Forks, ND.
This is
definitely North Dakota. The land of
nothing. But hey, look at this. They named a town “Michigan”.
An hour
later, we arrive at stop number 2.
Uh-huh…a quilt shop.
This one
wasn’t as good. It didn’t take very long
and nothing was added to the pile in the RV.
This was
kind of depressing.
But I
guess when you live somewhere that the winter is 8 months long, maybe it has to be celebrated.
Moving on
from the quilt shop we drive about 5 miles south of US-2 to our parking spot
for the night. The Spirit Lake Casino Resort.
It’s on
the shore of Devil’s Lake. It’s probably
Spirit Lake to the Native Americans here.
Don’t know the story.
The
facility is just OK but more than satisfactory for our overnight stay.
Now for
the highlight of the whole trip. We walk
up to the casino…
…past
their marina…
…and into
heaven.
The
Wednesday night seafood buffet. I
started out with a cluster of snow crab, then moved to a more serious position
King crab,
scampi, and coconut shrimp. After that,
I had a little more scampi and three or four more clusters of snow crab. Throw in a spoonful of a half dozen salads,
bowl of chowder, piece of apple crisp and a bowl of chocolate ice cream and I’m
pretty much done with food for the day.
And all
for only $20.
That’s it
for Wednesday. More travel tomorrow
across the plains of America.
Ta-ta for
now.
