Day 4…Superior North Shore

It's been a few days since I've had an opportunity to post.  We're connected again for a couple days...or more so I'll get you caught up with a few posts today.

Day 4…Superior North Shore

It was another travel day today, taking us 175 miles north and west of Wawa.

We were up and ready to travel by 8:30 am and headed north out of Wawa.

There’s not a lot of see for the first couple hours as we drive through the Ontario wilderness.  As we turn west and near the Lake Superior shoreline, the topography begins to change to rocks and hills winding through several small lakes.

We read about a waterfall near the town of Terrace Bay and decided to stop there to stretch our legs. A boardwalk leads down to a viewing platform.

This is the Aquasabon Gorge and the falls there.

The viewing platform isn’t in the best position to view the falls but was the best available.  Another path was gated off so we declined to head that way, assuming there was a good reason for the closure.

Several more miles along the shoreline we arrive at the Rossport campground of Rainbow Falls Provincial Park.

Our site is on the shore of Lake Superior.

The beach is various sizes of round stone.  It’s kind of hard to walk through.

One thing for sure, the water is gin clear.

That picture is in about a foot of water.  It’s chilly too, not the 50° numbing kind of cold, but probably not much over 60°.  I didn’t expect to see any swimmers but there was a family that went in with their snorkel masks...Brrrr.

Many other places along the shore consist of slab rock.

This area is an archipelago of islands off Lake Superior that provides protected water for boaters and kayakers.

There aren’t a lot of boats here.  Actually, there’s not a lot of anything.  Most boating revolves around canoes and kayaks.  I did talk to a local at a little shop in town that had a dock behind it.  She told me they fish often and the salmon fishing here is excellent for Kings (up to 20 lbs.) and Coho.  She also said they get lots of brook trout, coasters, pike, a few walleye and of course, Superior has a ton of lake trout everywhere.

So outside of a stroll on the beach and freezing my toes in the Superior surf, this has been mostly a down day to regain some strength.  Tomorrow we go see why this place is called Rainbow Falls.
