O Canada.
Woke up and looked out the window to discover my favorite Great Lakes freighter going past. The Stewart J. Cort. This was one of the first 1000 foot ships built and still had the traditional pilot house on the bow.
Those ships are so long, they're hard to photograph when relatively close. I noticed that ship was between Duluth and Copper Harbor yesterday morning so it was about a 24 hour period to get across Lake Superior.
Another nice morning on the banks of the St Marys River as we prepped to vacate the Soo.
We had breakfast and got things put away and left the campground at 8:30 am. First stop was to top off the fuel tank in the RV. It was a wise decision. Price in the USA at the Soo was $3.05/gallon.
Our route today took us along the eastern shore of Lake Superior. A relatively low mileage day of about 150 miles.
We headed across the International Bridge toward Canada.
About halfway across, the USA and Canadian flags mark the border.
We breezed through customs and stopped at Walmart for a few items. We took very little fruit across the border. I wasn't sure if there were any restrictions with importing fruit. All they wanted to know was if I had a firearm, tobacco or booze. No, no and no. Have a nice day.
BTW...fuel in this part of Ontario is $1.33/liter. That's $5.00/US gallon Canadian funds or $3.80 US dollars. So the goal is to get out of Canada before we run our 52 gallons dry.
We head north on Hwy 17...
and pull off at the Chippewa River.
It's a scenic place not too far off the road. You can kind of see it from the road, but a little hike along the river gets you a much better view.
That's "Kathy on the Rocks" at the upper part of the falls and a broader shot below.
So from there we continued northward to "the" tourist stop between the Soo and Wawa.
The Canadian Carver.
This place has been there forever. They have some real nice carvings for sale from various artists. It's all too expensive for my budget.
Most of the stuff in there is a couple hundred bucks and up. I can never afford to pay for someone else's talent, but it's fun to look at. There are signs there about a "retirement sale" so it may not exist much longer.
Continuing north along the shore of Lake Superior.
I stopped at waterfall #2 for the day at the Sand River. This one was easy access and there was a parking lot just off the river.
No shortage of rock in this part of the world. Another scenic spot worth the time.
And then.......the highlight of the day....
The BIG GOOSE!!!!
That's been a landmark at Wawa since forever. I remember going there with the family when we vacationed at Batchawana Bay, Ont. back around 1960. Same goose, I suspect, but they've built a visitor center around it.
After that kind of excitement, we found our resting place for the night. Wawa RV Resort and Campground. "Resort" might be a stretch, but they have lightning fast internet and a pool.
It's on the banks of the Magpie River just north of Wawa.
So that's it for today. The trek around the north side of lake Superior continues tomorrow. Access to the internet is likely not going to be available until maybe next Tuesday.
I'll be back when I can.
