Day 43 – Grand Canyon Trailer Village

Day 42 turned out to be another day of rest.  I think Kathy overdid at the buffet brunch and it took her a while to overcome some morning issues.  By the time she had recovered, it was triple digit temperatures outside and no place for a northerner.

So day 43 and we’re headed to the Grand Canyon for a four night stay.  It’s about a 275 mile drive.

Our route takes us south and east out of Las Vegas.

We pass by Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam.

We couldn’t really see the dam from the highway bridge that now crosses the river canyon downstream from the dam and we didn’t feel a need to get into the tourist crowd with the motorhome.  We’ve been there before…twice.

We stopped at a highway turnout and took a couple shots of the vista in that area.

An hour or so down the road we stopped for a few groceries at a Walmart in Kingman, AZ.  I tried to put the nature spin on this Walmart since we’re on a scenic trip.  I’m not sure it works at Walmart.

So we’ve put another state in the rear view mirror.  We’re out of Nevada and into Arizona.  It’s our 12th state or province.

With the cupboard restocked, we continue on eastward.

Before turning back north toward the Grand Canyon, we stopped in Williams, AZ and touched the famed Route 66.

There was a quilt shop there that Kathy had to shop in.

I walked across the tracks and checked out the steam engine display at the Grand Canyon Railway.

I had to hustle back across the tracks to the RV when a real train approached.

After shopping and trains, it was back to the driver’s seat and head north to the park.

Notice the clouds in the last couple shots.  It's been a while since we've seen any and we even passed through a brief shower heading into the park.

We arrived mid-afternoon at the Grand Canyon Trailer Village and found our site.

It’s not exactly level, but we made it work.  We have electric, water, sewer, and cable TV.  Not bad for a national park.  To access internet, we have to go over to a nearby lodge so my posting schedule might be a little different.

Anyway, once set up, we took a walk to get the lay of the land and find the restroom.
OOPS!  Seems there’s something on the path to the potty.

Actually, they’re here, there, and everywhere.

The ranger said the elk are mating at now and to be a bit wary of the bull elk.  They’re a little testy right now.   OK, I’ll stay out of their way.  I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of a mating elk.

And since we have elk, we have elk poop…EVERYWHERE.

They’ll be no night time strolls without a light.  Kathy originally thought they were cherries that fell off a tree.  Therefore, we have dubbed the elk poop…”Road Cherries”.

Like I mentioned, the posting is going to be a tad inconvenient and needs to happen during daylight so I’ll get to it when I can.

Tomorrow, we’ll go to the canyon.  It’s less than a mile from our campsite and the shuttle stops here as well so we’re all set for transportation and it’s free.
