It
was cloudy, hazy and COLD this morning.
Somewhere in the mid 30°s with a bit of a wind. Brrrrrrrrrrrrr!!
Our
planned excursion today was the Banff Gondola up the mountain but the
temperature and most of all, the haze makes that event worthless. So we had a nice breakfast, did a little
house cleaning and waited for it to warm up a touch before heading out on the
trail to HooDoo Point.
This
trail runs right behind the campground where we pick it up.
It’s
actually a mountain biking trail as well with views up and down Bow Valley.
There’s
an oxbow in the river here, hence the valley name.
The
trail follows the valley ridge and we get to HooDoo Point. What’s a HooDoo, you ask?
That’s
a HooDoo. It’s sedimentary rock covered
by harder rock so once the sedimentary erosion occurs, towers are left.
I
could direct these guys a thousand miles south to what looks like hoodoo heaven
at Bryce Canyon in Utah.
It’s
probably different but the result is about the same kind of structure.
The
water flowing through this valley has the same milky aqua color as Lake Louise.
And
a final peek at our cool, cloudy, hazy Banff skyline.
So
our impression of Banff National Park isn’t real favorable. It’s commercial and crowded. Our vision of a national park is woods and
water. This is a ski resort with a
couple scenic spots.
Tomorrow
we’re out of here.
It
will be a full day of travel toward the SW to the good ol’ US of A.
